Yellowstone bison gores woman as she walks away

The 47-year-old Phoenix resident—whose identity has not been made public by the National Park Service—and her companion were out for a stroll in a field in front of the Lake Lodge Cabins on Lake Yellowstone’s north shore when they spotted two bison, according to a news release from the park. One of the bison charged at the woman on Monday morning and gored her, even though the woman and her friend turned to leave the animals.

According to the Park Service, “the woman suffered significant injuries to her abdomen and chest.”

The guest was flown to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center via helicopter. The Park Service stated that there is “no additional information to share, including the woman’s condition,” and that the event is being investigated. A request for more information was not immediately answered by a Park Service representative.

How close the woman was to the bison before to the incident is unknown. The park, which is primarily in Wyoming, mandates that people keep their distance from bison at least 25 yards.

According to park officials on Monday, “wildlife in Yellowstone National Park is wild and can be dangerous when approached.”

Following multiple incidents that made news last year over visitors being attacked for going too close to the bison, the goring is the first incidence of its kind at Yellowstone in 2023.

When an Ohio tourist approached a bison too closely on May 30, 2022, the animal gored her and threw her ten feet into the air, according to park officials. The Grove City, Ohio, resident, 25, approached the animal from a boardwalk at Black Sand Basin to within ten feet. According to a press release from the Park Service, two additional people were also within 25 yards of the bison. On Memorial Day in 2022, she went up to the bison and it charged at her.

  1. She got what she deserved. I sincerely hope she will make a speedy recovery. Now, having said that. I have to ask, when will people learn their lessons?

  2. I think the distance to avoid the bison should be listed as feet not yards. I believe feet is more familiar to most people than yards. If you indicated 25 yards I believe 75 feet is more understandable than yards.

  3. Yellowstone National Park needs to start limiting the people coming into the park on a daily basis with a permanent set quota. Additionally people harassing these animals need to face a substantial fine and possibly barred for life

  4. Maybe the park needs to build an overhead cable car or sky rail system for viewing these dangerous animals. There has been too many incidents on the ground involving animals and hot water pools. Obviously, something needs to change here because the visitors are not following the rules.

and “stay at least 25 yards away” and “stay on the boardwalk” don’t they understand? Yes, there are times when animals animals act up, that is why they call them WILD ANIMALS! (They can’t read the signs! It’s no wonder that their children don’t know how to listen.

  9. I hope the person is cited and fined for interfering with an animal In its habitat. Along with another citation for not following park service directions to keep away from these glorious animals. Enough of this ridiculous, disrespectful behavior in our beautiful wild spaces.

I can’t offer ANY sympathy because we are supposed to have enough sense not to approach a WILd animal!! Who probably does not even want to be approached by humans!! Listen to the rangers, they KNOW!!!!

  13. They should put up signs with these stories around Yellowstone so people are REMINDED about what a wild animal can do, to no fault of irs own. A stark reminder of it really happening may deter thrm, but probably not bc people are idiots and just want the best photo, the closest selfish with the giant beasts, who are simply doing their thing

  14. NEVER POKE A MOMMA BEAR!

There really are some stupid things that you should never do.
Sneak up behind a MOMMA BEAR and really yell out “BOO.”

Especially if she’s with her cubs
Coming out of her winters den.
i warn you now, if you try it once
    You’ll never do it again.

Nor should you ever chase a MOOSE
    Across some swampy land
‘Cause if you fall he catches up
    (surgery costs a couple grand).

And if you’re in a National Park
    And come across a BUFFALO
Don’t ask him for a selfie
    He’ll probably tell you “NO.”

    He’s got no inclination
to hang ‘round with any folks
Especially those that are dumb enough to give MOMMA BEARS a poke.

Remember it’s THEIR house you’re in
    As an uninvited guest
    So think about acting right
Leave the animals alone, at rest!

But keep in mind these stupid things
And if you have the nerve
Go ahead and poke a MOMMA BEAR
    You’ll get what you deserve!

  17. Yellowstone National Park is the Bison’s natural habitat for life. When humans go into Bison territory they become frightened and feel threatened. When people get out of their cars and begin to walk/run around, try to get close to them to take pictures they increase their defenses and charge the crowd. Don’t be so dumb to see if you can take a chance and get the “Best” picture with your self and the Bison. The Bisons do not want anyone near them. Leave them alone if you want to live to tell your story about your experience in Yellowstone National Park.

  18. I feel that when you allow humans anywhere near animals who have their own territory, it’s wrong. And in today’s world, a lot of people are ignorant to the rules. I feel that the national park closed down for a while, so animals can just be in their own territory. And I personally would start a fundraiser for the park while it’s closed thank you.

  20. What is it that they don’t understand about wild animals? They walk up like they are household pets, “here kitty kitty kitty…”
Bison are simply culling the herd.🤨

  21. The wildlife in Yellowstone are just that, WILD. You should admire the Bison from a safe distance and not from close up. Take a lot of pictures and place them in an album or on a wall and admire them as often as you would like.

the gored woman&her companion were way too close – AND Turning your back on any animal in the wild is a touron itself?

  23. When are these people that are bothering the animals going to be arrested and banned from the parks? They’re already invading on the animals territory. Do you really need a close up with a bison? I think if they’re stupid enough to get near an animal then they should suffer the consequences. I don’t think the animals should be punished for protecting their young, protecting their territory and just because people are annoying them. These entitled people that think it’s okay to ignore all those signs at the parks, trying to get into the hot springs,
trying to pet the animals with their babies. Talk about survival of the fittest. If they’re stupid enough to get mauled and killed by wild animal then we’re weeding out the stupid ones.

  24. People have no respect park rules and wild life rights. This lack of common sense is getting people hurt and endangering the opportunity to enjoy our national parks, as well as endangering the wildlife.

  25. I don’t know why some humans don’t get that the animals in the wild are WILD and wildness needs to be respected if not just a little bit feared. They have boundaries and especially at certain times, as mating season, with their young, or even just browsing and minding their own business, they need to be left alone. Would you approach a coiled and rattling rattlesnake? They’re warning you that you need to keep away. Please just understand that a wild creature’s only defense if it feels threatened is to fight back.

  27. First of all the people that break the rules and approach the bison and get too close should be fine, the only way to get through to these people is make them pay a fine a big one they will stop getting out of their cars and stop approaching the wildlife. They are not using their brains for much of anything when approaching the buffalo. The people need to learn to stay out of their way. People seem to be Breaking All the Rules. And the people need to be fined heavily. Thank you a concerned citizen, very concerned for the wildlife in Yellowstone.

  28. What don’t these people understand about the bison and other wild animals in the parks? They should be made to read the park brochure in front of a ranger and then give it a test on it before they’re allowed in the park!

  29. People are totally ignorant, and totally self-centered to think that they can do whatever they want in a situation, where they are approaching a wild animal! Get yourself a good zoom lens and stay away. Don’t risk your life and the life of the animal because if that animal charges you and damages you, they will have to destroy the animal too.. don’t be a selfish idiot!

  30. Stupid is as stupid does. Why do so many people think they can walk up to a wild animal like they’re in a petting zoo or have them as domesticated pets is beyond me. There is no common sense anymore.

  31. Numerous online videos show that people don’t respect the rules where these animals are concerned. They always want to get closer or pretend that they can engage without an issue. I have no sympathy for the offenders. They get what they earned.

  32. She is to blame. One should know you don’t go out in a field, regardless of it being 25 feet or not away from a bison and stand, walk, run or just be stupid. I live where black bears could be in my back yard, do you think I stand around there in the dark at night?

  33. In order to protect the bison from stupid, asinine people doing stupid things it’s time to close off their areas. Close the parks if necessary! Also arrest and fine stupid people whom do not adhere to the rules of the parks. That is even if they have been hurt by the buffalo! If a person dies the buffalo also has to die because of stupidity? That’s where the crime is! So tired of hearing this!!

  34. Lets see full size bison about 2,000 lbs average human 100 to 200 lbs.
How much stupidity do you need to take pictures of a wild animal in the wild, might as well put a rino out there and see who is brave enough to take a picture. Verbal warnings and signs just isn’t enough how many more deaths will it take.

  36. I have been coming to Yellowstone for over 23 years. Stay your distance from wild animals. They’re not stuffed animals they’re real they’re dangerous. Look from a distance stay inside your car no selfies just remember the experience you have in this beautiful part of the country take pictures from a distance, those stupid people who get injured bring it on themselves don’t kill the animals because they did something to a person. The person caused it their wild don’t come to Yellowstone if you don’t understand the wild and enjoy the realization of this beautiful land and its inhabitants.

  37. What is it going to take for these dumb asses to stay away from the wildlife. Didn’t their parents raise them not to mess with the wild animals I don’t think aloy of people were properly raised to leave the wild animals alone. Idiots were never raised to leave the wildlife alone because will kill you. I am so for the wildlife when people don’t get it she got what she deserved.
